Cozy, low-key and completely relaxed, Le Vatout Bed and Breakfast is a home that we're fortunate to share with our guests, our friends. A traditional New England farmhouse, it's our personal artists' retreat and its rooms are filled with paintings, photographs and found objects. Books beckon wherever there's space. Desks invite the writer in all but one room.
But life around here congregates in the kitchen - the hearth is Le Vatout's center, its heart. Outwardly, it's nothing special, just a big old kitchen last upgraded decades ago, no fancy fixtures, no polished granite, no industrial strength sink --- what matters here is not appearance, what matters at Le Vatout is soul. Meals have substance, flavors have a twist, and old-fashioned conversation reigns as your hosts have a way with herbs and with words and know when to serve either.
Whether you crave the quiet pleasure of a cup of tea in the garden, favor a communal breakfast of buckwheat pancakes served at the dining table flooded with sun, or simply want to hang out at the kitchen island, dig into a shrimp omelet and chat, you'll quickly discover that at Le Vatout everything's just different enough to delight.

Services
A short walk from the village of Waldoboro, Le Vatout is part of a sprawling farm house.
Don't blink when you drive by.
Like most special things in life it's easy to miss as it hides behind its trees.
Built in the 1830's, the big house with its guestrooms is connected to the little house, our private quarters, which in turn are attached to the backhouse and a grand barn that we're busy turning into an artist studio, gallery and darkroom.
Store your gear, your bikes, your skis in the garage (it's that wheathered old building, obscured by the blooms of a climbing hydrangea) and step inside for a spell.

Le Vatout has four guestrooms.
Like our feathered friends after whom we've named them, they're simple and homey with flashes of decoration that will delight you every time you stay.
The beds are good (we've tried them out ourselves) and in the winter we can provide you with flannel sheets and hot water bottles on request.
For the summer, for those few nights when the breeze coming from the river does not suffice to cool you down, there are fans.
Thick, soft towels are guaranteed year-round.
Almost all rooms have desks (with powerstrips for all your electronic gizmos), comfortable chairs and reading lamps and a good old-fashioned luggage rack.

It's different - or so we're being told: breakfast at Le Vatout is not your usual fare.
We're not big fans of sugary stuff and I, Dominika, tend to serve what we would eat: Savory food in generous portions, full of flavor, and fresh, fresh, fresh.
As the "chef" I'll be the first to tell you that I've had no formal training and that I don't like to follow specific recipes.
To me cooking, like art or writing, is a creative experience.
In other words, I like to make it up - inspired by ingredients like herbs and veggies from the garden; by you, our guests, your wants and needs; or by my childhood memories.

Quaint sea-side villages, windjammer sailing cruises, miles and miles of shoreline and panoramic vistas, plus lobsters, lighthouses, and artist's studios - no wonder Midcoast Maine is a favorite vacation destination.
Stretching all the way from Brunswick to the Down East region of Maine, it includes popular places like Boothbay Harbor, Rockland and Camden where accommodations abound and streets teem with visitors.
But savvy travelers know there's a lot more to Midcoast Maine.
Waldoboro is uniquely situated to let you experience all that the Midcoast has to offer.

Le Vatout's packages offer the quiet comfort of a small Bed & Breakfast far away from the maddening crowds, fresh, fabulous local food and the tutelage of your own, private instructor/guide.
We've designed most of these mini-vacations for two - a couple, two friends, a mother/daughter team - but they can be expanded to a group of four as easily as they can be adapted for just one person.
Either way you can be sure you'll have that creative uplift, that intimate encounter with nature, that takes you beyond yourself and lets you return home enriched, relaxed and ready to tackle your life again.
