Unlike any other motels and hotels on Anna Maria Island, family owned and operated Haley's Motel has a unique story to tell about its origin.
When a small airplane ran into some engine trouble back in 1949, the pilot wasn't able to successfully land on the designated grass landing strip in Holmes Beach and ended up landing the plane on the sandy beachfront instead.
Fortunately surviving the landing, the pilot, Frank Haley, began his search for help and walked towards a shell-paved road, which is still named Shell Street to this day.
