First built in 1989, the original facility served Duke University's Fuqua School of Business for dining and accommodations needs for the Executive MBA students and non-degree program guests. The property was completely renovated in 2016, including an expansion of an additional 85 guest rooms and a 5,400 square foot ballroom, as well as additional meeting spaces.
The namesake of the hotel is James Buchanan "J.B." Duke, the son of Washington Duke for whom the university was named and one of the most successful industrialists of the 20th century. In 1924, J.B.
