The Ranney-Crawford House, a Putney, Vermont bed and breakfast, is a two centuries old brick Federal manor house built by Elijah Ranney and his wife Lydia Crawford Ranney on land purchased in 1786 from James Crawford to replace the wooden farm house that first stood on the property.
Elijah, who was deacon of the nearby Westminster West Congregational Church where he and is wife are buried, became wealthy by shipping farm produce down the Connecticut River to Connecticut.
This allowed them the means to construct their elegant home with Palladian windows, Rumford fireplaces, fine woodwork and wainscotting.
